The Cairns Winter Music School is an annual four-day music school for adults. Musicians from the local area join participants from across the country to rehearse and perform a programme of classical music. Adult music schools are widely supported in other parts of the world, but the Cairns Winter Music School is unique in providing this opportunity to Australian musicians.

The school is committed to excellence and offers an intensive full orchestral experience with an internationally respected conductor, a professionally recognised soloist and experienced section leaders.

All participants are enthusiastic, skilled, adult musicians or tertiary students who are training to become professional musicians, with a minimum current playing experience of Grade 7.

The 2017 Cairns Winter Music School program, to be conducted by Mark Eager and featuring violinist Caroline Hopson, will focus on the rehearsal and performance of:

  • Tchaikovsky Piano Concerto No 1
  • Dvorak Symphony No 9 “New World”
  • Mussorgsky/Rimsky Korsakov “Night on a Bare Mountain”

The Finale concert for the 2018 Cairns Winter Music School will be held in St. Monica’s Cathedral, Cairns.

It has to be one of the most beneficial experiences a musician can have to work with a first class conductor and soloist – to be able to get a new aspect to your playing that you might never have had before – meeting people of like interests and sharing a wonderful performance experience with them
