Our Conductor – Mark Eager

Dr. Mark Eager is an exciting and passionate conductor with extensive knowledge in the orchestral field. Underpinning this is his 25 years of experience as a world-class soloist and orchestral player, predominantly for the BBC.

“stunning and brilliantly realised” (The Guardian, UK)

Mark is Principal Conductor and Artistic Director of The Welsh Sinfonia. He has clear, highly musical direction and a consummate grasp of musical idioms, often being praised for his mature understanding, thoughtful musicianship and command of the orchestra.

Mark has developed the Welsh Sinfonia’s groundbreaking education project Crescendo and in 2017 The Earl of St. Andrews awarded Mark an Honorary Doctorate - Doctor of Arts, in recognition of his ‘outstanding contribution to music and performance’.

Mark is a champion of high quality music education and has been the Conductor of Cardiff University Symphony Orchestra for nearly 10 years. Under Mark’s direction they have released 2 CDs of world premiere works, with another to be recorded for world renowned Toccata Classics in November 2017. Mark has toured the orchestra several times, most recently to Xiamen, China where he and the orchestra were immediately invited back. He constantly enjoys the thrill of inspiring students to greater excellence.

Mark tours extensively worldwide, this year alone to China, Hong Kong, India and Singapore, as well as his usual annual residencies in Sydney, Melbourne, Tasmania and of course Cairns where the CWMS orchestra is enjoying great success.
